Finding Balance in Tech: My Journey to Prioritizing Mental Health

If there’s one thing I’ve learned as a software engineer, it’s that focusing solely on work can eventually take a toll on both your energy and well-being. I used to be that person—an introvert who poured all my energy into solving problems, meeting tight deadlines, and striving for perfection. By the time I was done for the day, I had almost nothing left to invest in myself or my relationships.

Awareness is Power

The turning point came when I started to make this phrase to work, “awareness is power.” It was a reminder to recognize my limits, my needs, and my emotions. Rather than ignoring the signals my mind and body were sending, I learned the value of

This newfound awareness gave me permission to step back and evaluate my work-life balance. I recognized that while my passion for coding is immense, my mental and physical health couldn’t keep up if all I did was work.

Simple Practices That Made a Difference

I began making small changes to my daily routine—simple yet powerful actions that helped me regain control and clarity

Scheduling Work Breaks

Instead of pushing through exhaustion, I allowed myself short intervals of rest. Be Focused app helped me to schedule the time when I needed to focus on something. During the break, I to stretch, take a short walk, or even do five-minute mindfulness exercise.

Prioritizing Personal Passions

I started carving out time for the things I love—like reading a good book, playing music, or pursuing side projects that genuinely interested me. This time away from “work mode” helped me recharge mentally and emotionally.

Listening to My Body

Taking a moment to ask, “Do I need to go out for some fresh air or is it time to hit the gym?” has been transformative. Checking in with myself physically keeps stress and tension from quietly building up.

You're Not Alone

If you’re feeling overwhelmed or burnt out, know that it’s normal—especially in fluctuating job market, where even in-demand roles like software engineering can seem uncertain. Acknowledging these feelings is an important first step toward regaining your balance.

Talk About It

Reach out to friends, family, or professionals. Sometimes simply speaking your fears or frustrations aloud can lighten the mental load.

Set Realistic Expectations

You don’t have to sprint through life. Pace yourself, prioritize sustainability, and remind yourself that steady progress is still progress.

Celebrate Small Wins

Even minor achievements can boost morale. Recognizing them reinforces positive habits and reminds you that every step counts.

Remember: Feeling overwhelmed is normal during tough times, but you’re still here—surviving now and capable of overcoming whatever life throws your way. Take it one step at a time, and never underestimate the difference small, mindful habits can make.
